Default Bose Dual Cube speakers & the Z100

I'm looking for some very small speakers and was thinking of something along the lines of the Bose Dual Cube speakers. Has any-one used these just plugged into a Z100? I'm guessing that the base response won't be great, but I'd trade that for the size if it would sound OK.

Gareth,

Canton makes a great line of small speakers. Any model from the Plus Series is worth a look.

Bose have numerous cube speakers so I'm not sure of the exact model you refer. Are you speaking of the ones with 2 cubes, one on top of the other (often called dual cube) or just the single cube (ofter referred to as jewel cube)

Obviously any speaker sounds are subjective and varies a lot with the room accoustics etc.

I have a pair of Bose AM-3 cubes in my kitchen/breakfast room which, combined with the separate base unit, sound very good in my opinion. Being a sterile kitchen environment there aren't really any soft furnishings in the room and it's in this environment that I find the Bose setup works best and can outperform bookshelf alternatives in delivering the sound the ear likes to listen to.

There are better speakers for the money, you pay a premium for the Bose size covenience and obviously some for their marketing department, but if it's un-imposing sound you want I can highly recommend. They are small and the speaker brackets are all cleverly designed to hide the wire as it comes out of the wall/ceiling if necessary.

My only concern with the original post is that you didn't mention the Bose bass unit. You will need one and I wouldn't consider any Bose implementation without. I know Bose only sell the dual-cube setups as a complete set with the bass unit...there's a reason. The result will be a nice rich bass, some even complain it's too much, but it can be easily controlled using the Sonos base/treble control on the local zone player.

Just browsing these forums and noticed this thread.
I have to recommend the Bose too. I have three pairs of the bose dual cube (Accoustimas 5 Series III) hooked up to 3 different zones with the sub unit and the sound is great (party mode rocks!)
Great little speaker

Default Another Option -- Orb Audio

Just purchased a pair of Orb Audio speakers for my kitchen (WAF, you know). Very clean in the midrange and high end of frequency spectrum; not surprisingly, not strong at the low end. Solid speakers and I plan to buy more down the road. Excellent customer service from order to receipt.

I would also look at the KEF 3000 series of speakers.

I have heard the Orbs, nice speaker for the size, and deliver more per dollar than Bose, then again, soundwise, neither are something I would own.

Default Polk Audio Rm101

Take a listen to the POLK AUDIO RM101's.
They are only about twice the size as the Bose and they do have a real nice mid bass.

I use 6 of them for my 7.1 surround

Thanks for the suggestions all.
To clarify, as per the thread title I was thinking of the dual cube speakers but without any sub. ;-)
I live in Cyprus, and I have a superb 8 speaker audio setup in the main room, but its hardle subtle. For the rest of the house I want discrete pretty much invisible componants and I thought that those Bose speakers would have been perfect. But from what I read a sub is essential, so maybe Bose isn't the best choice here....

It's not a sub, it's a bass unit.

I discussed this thread with my wife to be and she asked "where is our bass unit then?"

She really couldn't remember where it was as she can't see it on top of the fridge pushed back against the wall.

"It's not a sub, it's a bass unit."
pure semantics - its still a box I don't want.

I've taken a look at the Canton speaker range they do look like the sort of thing I'm after. Does any-one have the Canton Plus MX by any chance?
