Sonoswatcher help...

Hello all, ive been reading alot about the sonoswatcher command line scripts on here. I haven't tried them yet because im still trying to get my head around the subject.. Some folks are using it to turn on their amp when "play" is recv'd by the Sonos ZP. What i dont get is the "turning on the amp/receiver" part and how that happens? Ultimately i'd like to:

1. hit play on Sonos iphone app
2. turn on receiver and select correct input for Sonos to play thru.

I dont have any home automation s/w and not sure if thats a requirement for this type of setup. I see that user Avee is using it to trigger a power strip but beyond that i dont see how. Can anyone clue me in please?
