Apologies for the misunderstanding.

The device in TeeDoubleUDee's link is a dumb Ethernet switch. If, say, you ran out of ports on your router you could connect one of these and it would expand the number of ports available for additional peripherals. It allows anything to talk to anything else, simultaneously.
