Default Codec

I use 2 different codecs depending on if it's for the Sonos or the Android devices.

All music gets ripped using MediaMonkey Gold to FLAC's with compression setting of 1 (huge files but faster load times), then I export to mp3 (192K Kbps standard VBR for the Android Devices). This is all fully automated then I use rsync to distribute to the devices

I use AAC cranked up as high as it goes. It's easy (I use iTunes), and it works well with Sonos and my Android phone.

Before i bought SONOS i only used ALAC. After SONOS reported much of my music as corrupt (allthough it worked flawlessly in iTunes) i have re-converted all into FLAC.

And you can have that folder of flac files upload to your Google Music for free and it gets converted and stored as 340 mp3.

You do know it is impossible to get a "better" sound by upscaling from 16/44.1 of the CD to 24/96, don't you? Even the most dyed in the wool audiophiles will tell you this. I'm afraid your "audio nirvana" is due to pre-conceived expectations, not reality.

Personally I like Flac, but it's not supported by most portable devices, now I use AAC more.

Coming to the Sonos sphere from ancient but way ahead of their time OmniFi DMS-1 streamers, running OpenFi firmware. This setup only supported MP3, so that's the codec all my files were ripped in, VBR.

Used iTunes to rip. Tried a couple of the linux rippers, but they used freeDB, which was wrong at least 25% of the time, at least for the music I listen to.
