Question Spotify vs. Napster?

As a UK user I'll soon have a choice between Spotify and Napster as streaming music services.

My current Napster deal seems better than that offered by Spotify (£5/month for streaming + 5downloads /month) whereas, as far as I can tell right now Spotify will offer just streaming for £10/month.

I was wondering whether in terms of breadth of coverage or other factors there were advantages to Spotify that I've missed.

Are the services essentially equivalent?

Tim

Default Rhapsody & Spotify

Hi,

As a comparison it might also be useful if anyone who has had experience of both Spotify and Rhapsody could give their opinion of the relative merits of both services.

Cheers
Chris

Default Napster is dead, long live Spotify

Got a sub to both services at the moment. Signed up for Napster when I got my Sonos and was very pleased with it.

Now Spotify is available I am happy to drop Napster and pay the extra £5 a month to get streaming music on my smartphone (have wifi at work so it turns my HTC Desire in to an mp3 player with 9 million albums!).

Spotify mobile also allows you to create offline playlists which it will sync over wifi, then if you have an A2DP compatible head unit in your car (which I don't yet) you can then play the tracks in your car over bluetooth without eating in to your 3G allowance.

Some of the more eclectic of my musical tastes seemed to be catered for a bit better by Napster but the services are very similar in essence.

What it boils down to is Napster is great if you only want access from Sonos or a PC and costs half as much as Spotify, but if streaming to your phone (be it a Nokia, Android or iPhone) is worth a fiver a month then it is a no brainer.

The key difference is mobile support.

I originally subscribed to Napster (£10/mth), when it became available and upgraded to "Napster to go" shortly after to include mobile support. This cost £15/mth.

Spotify then came along and really took over a lot of the market as they offered a free ad supported service. Upgrading to premium, £10/mth, removed the ads but also added mobile support on iPhone and Android handsets.

In response, Napster dropped their stream price to £5/mth - but left "to go" at £15/mth - still with a dependence on Microsoft compatible devices. No iPod, no Android.

I dumped "to go", dropping Napster to £5/mth and spent the tenner I saved on Spotify. Their mobile app is quite excellent.

Now Spotify is available on my Sonos kit, this removes much of the need for Napster. Spotify is faster and higher quality.

Napster do have charts and artist radio, however, which are sorely missing on Spotify. It also has a bigger back catalogue, a lot of the older stuff is missing on Spotify.

I'm going to stick with both for now but 90% of my listening is Spotify at the moment and I always look for an album there first.

There's no point in discussing Rhapsody here right now. It's US only and Spotify is not available in the US, so no buyer can officially choose between them.

Yes, the mobile access is the key benefit of Spotiy over Sonos.

And with modern phones with wifi, you can mange your music on the move, and no need to plug you phone into your PC to sync. The playlists you create on your mobile are the playlists you see on Sonos, and vice versa, all completely seamless and automatic.

Cheers,

Keith

Everyone has already said it above, but the big advantage with Spotify is the mobile support. I've been very happy with Napster's service (and you can't complain for £5 month with 5 free MP3s) but the iPhone support is worth the additional £5 to me, especially for use at work.

Napster might have shot themselves in the foot now - they've openly said that they already have an iPhone app but aren't releasing it due to mobile licensing costs.... so I expect there'll be a number of people moving over to Spotify instead now.

I recently moved all my Napster albums over to Spotify in preparation for the end of September... there's a number of Napster albums that aren't on Spotify, but then again there's also a number of albums on Spotify that aren't on Napster.

I've been very happy with the free Spotify service so far, so can't see any issues when I go Premium after Sonos release the update.

As a Spotify user and recent convert to Sonos, I am delighted about the two coming together but do wonder why it has to be through the Premium service ... no downloading or offline mode with Sonos so why not Unlimited as well ... ? Straight commercialism?

Anyone know if The Beatles and Led Zepplin are available on Spotify ? if they are then its worth dumping Napster for that alone.
Also when is Spotify available on Sonos.
Thanks.

Just looked and the answer is no. Unless you like tribute bands.

There are several major artists who have specifically disallowed their music to be used on this sort of streaming music service. I believe the list includes:

Led Zeppelin
The Eagles
AC/DC
Metallica
The Beatles

I'm sure there are others, and there may be the odd exception to this. But in general, these artists material isn't available legally on any music service.

Or, in other words, if you come across a lesser-known music service which does have a substantial catalogue of any of these artists, the chances are they are doing so without the permission of the artists/record companies.

Cheers,

Keith
