Ahhhh, hash tables. Reading that brings back fond memories of Data Structures 201. Personally I enjoyed it (I'm a geek ), but it was a "I really gotta change my major" class for many others. Funny that the Knuth book (The Art of Computer Programming, Volume 3: Sorting and Searching, Second Edition. Addison-Wesley, 1998. ISBN 0-201-89685-0. Section 6.4: Hashing, pp.513–558.
) listed as further reading on the Wiki entry was one of the texts in that class.

We smugly think that we are geeks until humbled by someone like Kunth. Similar to Newton needing to invent calculus before he could continue his work, Kunth needed to write his own word processor in order to be able to better publish his work.

Yeah, one of the greatest. As a student, just wrapping my head around understanding his stuff was hard, imagine the talent it took to think that stuff up?

[\hairsplitting hat on]

No, he didn't. He invented a typesetting software, and avoids what most people think of today when they hear "word processor" (though they CAN be used to produce TeX code).

[\hairsplitting hat off]

Wrote my thesis in LaTeX. I recall fondly hearing some other people say "LaTeX is for [wusses], real men write in TeX". Ah, gender discrimination, geekiness, and making mountains out of molehills all in one small sentence.
