This would be very tricky because a web server would be needed somewhere. The Blackberry would use its connectivity over the public Internet to work with this server. For starters, most ISP's terms of service for home users specifically prohibit home based servers. In this case one could probably argue, successfully, that this would not be a "server", but a control device. Next, one would need to grapple with issue that home Internet connections do not usually have a fixed IP address. There are work arounds for this issue.

There are other issues, such UPnP over an external network. Overall, I don't want to say "impossible", but the process would be rather geeky, not the plug and play that we are used to.

Since the Blackberry Internet connection would need to be kept open (to receive status updates from the ZonePlayers), there could be an issue with the Blackberry terms of service.

Practically, the connection over the public Internet would not be very "tight" compared to a local WiFi connection. This implies that status updates from the ZonePlayers could be delayed.

Default Bb 8820

Just curious.. I have a BB 8820 (T-Mobile), and it has wifi support built in, to the point where it can use something called "UMA" to act as the network connection for phone calls.. Whenever I'm in an area with a wifi signal, the phone can use that (versus the carriers cell network) for all of its communication.. I have this set up at home, and the phone gets a local NATd IP (via DHCP) from my local wifi router.. since it is on the same net as the ZP, there is no "Internet" (verus small "i" internet) communications going on, so the TOS for my carrier or whatever are essentially not in play.

Essentially, the BB can act just the same way an iphone or ipod touch does. So, given all that, any chance we might be able to use the BB as a controller in the same way an iphone can be?

Buy an iPhone or an iTouch. The Blackberry will go the way of the Psion.

Is this really necessary? It's obvious the posters in this thread have good reason for purchasing and using the Blackberry, and this forum is not for fan-boy fights over the best PDA. Let's be adults, shall we?

It's funny, I totally agree that this was an unnecessary post, and normally I'd be the first to weigh in with my own homily on how we should all just try to stay on topic and get along. But somehow the Psion reference got me laughing and I forgot to reply. seriously.

I too had a bad first impression but after owning a Storm for over a week, I really like it. Slacker app is geat. I have confidence that the phone will only get better. Since i use it equally for work, it think its a great mix of work and media. I would LOVE for Sonos to make an app for it. If not, I have my ipod touch to carry around.

Interesting - I'm glad to hear that a few people have actually enjoyed the unit. Most of the reviews are very negative.

The new palm device looks like it has some potential as well though!

I have a BB Bold with Wifi, I would love to get a sonos app on it. I have an iTouch but the BB is always in my pocket so it would be much easier.

And please no web app, forgive me but the web interface in the BB sucks.
