I am setting this up for my husband and I see that the app does not directly access the iTunes on his iPhone - I have to "share" the music folder on the pc - correct?
So does that mean that in order to access the music, I have to have the computer on? Is there any way to access the music that is already on his iPhone? Thanks! |

Sorry, you cannot play music from your iPhone, because Apple won't let you. It limits streaming from iDevices to Airplay only. This is an artificial limitation put in place by Apple so it can sell licensing to AirPlay equipped products. In addition, AirPlay equipped products require an additional chip in order to decode the AirPlay stream.
Because of this, if Sonos were to manufacturer an AirPlay equipped ZP, it would be more expensive (estimated cost for chip and license is $50-100 US) and it would be incompatible with existing Sonos components. Given this, along with explicit statements from the CEO, it is not expected that AirPlay support will go farther than the Aiport Express method. As for streaming without a computer on, there are a number of ways to listen to music without the computer on: 1) Use an online service like Napster or Spotify. 2) Store your iTunes library on an NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive. 3) Use the WD100 dock to play music from an iPod, iPhone or an iPad (with an extender). 4) Set up Airplay using an Airport Express to stream from an iPod, iPhone or iPad. You would need at least one Play:5, Connect, or Connect:Amp, the Play:3 does not have analog inputs. Of the above, the most popular are 2 and 1. You can purchase a 1TB NAS drive for around $100US, and setting up your iTunes library on the drive is easy. |
