I have a MyBookworld NAS which contains all my Sonos music files in FLAC and I think it's time I backed this up but am not sure the best way of doing it or what I need exactly. Something else I've often wondered about is should this be left on permanently, as mine is, or is it best to switch off? Thanks.

The My Book World has/had a USB connector. You could hook up a USB drive and use the MBW's web interface to back up the contents. The alternative is to use a PC and copy the files across the network to another device.
The MBW is designed to be left on and consumes minimal power. Make sure the disk is set to spin down when idle. |

I've got a ReadyNAS that I backup to a USB drive connected to my desktop. I use Syncback as the managing software. Its free, relatively quick and it can handle incremental scheduled backups. Backups are a good idea. I've got 3 complete copies of the music files. One is on the RAID5 ReadyNAS, the other is the on-site backup and the third is offsite. I invested 4 months of my life digitizing my collection. I don't want to have to do it again.

When I rip my music to FLAC I do it to the hard drive in my main computer. This I consider to be the master copy even though Sonos does not use this.
I then use SyncBack (free software) to "back up" this folder to my NAS drive. This NAS drive is where all my music is played from. I find it works well doing it this way as the ripping process works better for me when it's directly to a hard drive in the local computer rather than across the network onto a NAS drive

Good idea but only if you are starting out. All my stuff has already been ripped and now resides on my NAS.

I have 10,000+ Lossless files on my NAS, but I still rip new CDs to Lossless directly to the PC HD - not to the NAS. I will copy the Lossless file to the NAS once I finalize the tagging and artwork. Repeated saves and writes to the NAS is much slower than to the PC's HD - even when wired to the network. Your experience may differ, but I suspect that most folks will experience what I just described. Best of Luck
