Just wondering what peoples opinions are on the above two NAS drives?
Want to get a NAS and have narrowed it down to the 2 above (Although I still haven't ruled out a WD My Book Live 1TB - Reliability issues puts me off) I only need a single bay NAS as I would keep a back up of everything on external HDD's. I really like the look of the user interface on the QNAP . Not seen the Synology interface yet.The QNAP is edging it for me, but then I think to myself that the WD MBL 1TB is half the price.....

That's easy, the software is equally amazing on both units but:
QNAP has more processing power and double the RAM. QNAP has external eSATA so you can add on a second drive, as well as dual USB. QNAP has a one touch USB copy, which is essential for fast file transfer from external devices...unless you want to use putty. |

I took the plunge this morning and opted for the QNAP TS-112 and after literally hours of looking at different hard drives, opted for a Samsung F4 Ecogreen 2TB HD204UI.
Was looking at the WD Caviar Green & Seagate Barracuda Green drives, but they aren't recommended as being capable now on QNAP's compatibility list? Ho hum. Hopefully turn up tomorrow so I can start setting everything up the weekend ![]()

Not a good start. QNAP died on me after a few minutes
![]() Going through the Quick Install and got to the part where you install QNAP Finder and search for the NAS and it wouldn't find it as it had powered off. Won't turn back on at all now, with or without HDD attached. Amazon are sending me out a new one which should be here tomorrow. Hope I have better luck with this on..... |

New one arrived yesterday and is working ok
![]() Set it all up and now have my music collection stored on it and playing through my Sonos. The rest of the QNAP seems a bit over my head tbh, going to take alot of reading through user manuals. A complete noobs guide would be nice, but can't find anything over on QNAP forums. ![]()

Damn getting a DOA is no fun, thus far I've sold a few dozen QNAPs and they have all been problem free.
I've had many WD Greens and SG Barricudas die on me...they seem to go in waves. Still I have no problems using them in raids as long as you understand that you WILL not may but WILL be replacing them. In a single drive NAS I'm nervous to spec a consumer grade drive so I opt for constellation drives. I use a 1.5TB Con in my TS-112 that I use as my portable nas. They are pretty easy to setup, just go through all of the tabs, most are self explanatory. I can't stress setting up email notifications though, very important! |
