Hello everyone
my system consists of one Connect (connected via ethernet to the router), two Play5's and one Play3. The Connect is connected via optical to a Yamaha YSP Soundprojector. All components play in perfect sync, except for the Connect. When I turn the zone and the Yamaha on, it shows significant lag compared to all others which continue to play in sync. I did check the setup menus of the Yamaha and found the setting for adjusting the lag (since it's built for home cinema all the inputs can be adjusted). However, even with lag turned down to 0msec it is still very noticeable so I suppose it's caused by the Sonos Connect. Big thanks for any ideas or suggestions. Christoph |

Hello everyone,
new to these forums, maybe someone can help. I have a Connect which is connected to the router via ethernet and thus serves as my main Sonos component. Other than that, 2 wireless Play5's and one Play3. The Connect is connected to a Yamaha YSP Soundprojector via optical. All components play in perfect sync EXCEPT for the Connect/Yamaha combo which has noticeable lag. Now I did adjust the input settings on the Yamaha to 0msec lag. (Since it's for home cinema you can adjust all inputs). Still there is this lag so i suppose it's coming from Sonos? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Christoph |

Ok, after searching a bit more it seems that this is a known problem with DSP-using receivers and can't be completely eliminated on the receivers side.
There seems to be a feature request discussion going on concerning an adjustible delay on the side of the Zoneplayers. This would be great as it would help a lot of people I think. |

The lag s being created by the additional DSP processing applied by your Yamaha unit rather than the Sonos Connect. This problem is common with all AV receivers, especially if using any additional sound modes to create psuedo surround effects (like all-channel stereo). You can minimise the delay by using the "source direct" function if your Yamaha unit supports it - this will mean that the Yamaha simply outputs a conventional 2-channel stereo output. However the fact that the sound projector by design has to apply onboard audio processing to "steer" the sound form multiple drivers may mean the delay could still make grouping with other zones unusable I'm afraid. In this case there is nothing you can do that will currently improve things.

Thanks for your reply. Do you have any idea if the lag would be any different (while still there) with analog connections?
Seems like the only way to solve this is for Sonos to add delay functionality to the Zoneplayers. That would be nice. Thanks again |

It is worth a try, but some AVRs apply DSP to analogue connections too so YMMV.
And I agree fully with your comment, it would be very nice to have an adjustable delay setting from a ZP80/90/Connect which adds delay to any other players that get grouped together to provide improved sync. Last edited by neilball; Jun 21st, 2012 at 07:42 AM. Reason: spelling! |

There has also been some recent discussions with one model incuring the delay, and others that don't, even within the same manufacturer....
I was testing the zp90, on the denon last night, and it seems like there wasn't much delay if at all. With the DSP or not. However, physical distance might have helped. I was going to eventually try a P3 in the same room, and see if I can determine anything. |

jan303,
When grouped, the synchronization of all SONOS players is very closely matched in time. I have never seen any latency specs for the YAMAHA units, but I expect that it is non zero. In most cases, since the video latency is quite long, a non zero audio latency is actually constructive. The YAMAHA "delay" setting is an attempt to add enough additional audio latency to synchronize the audio and video. Which source are you listening to? Note that there is about a 70ms delay (latency) between a SONOS Line-In and output from the players. Typically, this is an issue only when a SONOS unit and the direct analog signal are playing in the same room. In this case the analog signal will lead the SONOS unit. |

Since playing in perfect sync is really important to me (almost no walls between the zones) I decided to change my setup.
I removed the Connect and put in a Bridge instead, and added a Play5 in the room. Now I am not using the Yamaha anymore at all. Oh well. Thanks everybody. |

jan303,
I have a YSP as well. I had a delay when using the optical input as well. What made a big difference for me was using analog RCA cables instead of the optical. It cut the delay down to where I can link zones with no perceptible delay. Hope this helps. |
