Default Suggestion for Setting up Sonos for Pool House

Hi All,

I installed 4 zones last year when I did some minor remodeling to my house and I love it.

About 3 year ago, way before I knew about Sonos, my brother bought outdoor speakers, a receiver and a CD player for his pool house. I was wondering if Sonos would be an option for him.

Currently his wireless network does not reach the pool area. We could setup a wifi repeater, or something similar closer to the pool house. If we did that, what we be his options for using Sonos? Would the hardware be setup in the pool house?

Thanks for any suggestions and I apologize if I am posting to the wrong forum.

Erik

I would get a Connect on the inside of the house connected to the router and then a network drive with your music connected to the router. I would then buy a Sonos Amp for the pool house and connect your outdoor speakers to the Amp. The amp would connect to the network wirelessly with the help of a WiFi repeater. Voila!

LazyLightning and Quintus,

SONOS ignores WiFi and WiFi ignores SONOS. While a WiFi wireless repeater will not help a SONOS player, the repeater may extend the operating area of an iPhone or iPad used as a SONOS controller.

Use a SONOS BRIDGE to extend the wireless range of a SONOS system. Normally, one would place the BRIDGE about half way between the distant player and another player. Multiple BRIDGE's could be used for very distant locations, but each BRIDGE will need a power connection.

Also, at least one SONOS component must be wired to your network. If the only wired location does not need music, you can use a BRIDGE. The BRIDGE provides wireless support, but cannot play music. If you can wire a player, the BRIDGE is optional or you can use a bridge as above to extend the operating area.

Thanks for the replies! I think I am getting it.

The router is in the basement and the only place he'd like Sonos (at this point) is at pool house. So, correct me if I am wrong please:

1. Attach a Bridge to the router in the basement.
2. Place another Bridge in the house as close as possible to the pool house (I think that would be about 20 yards or so).
3. This is where i am not 100% sure. Since he has an existing receiver and speakers, would he use a CONNECT or a CONNECT:AMP in the pool house? Also, does having an existing receiver there help at all or will the CONNECT or CONNECT:AMP be directly attached to the speakers.

He purchased a somewhat higher end receiver and would like to incorporate it if it is needed, could save money or if it can contribute to a higher quality sound.

Thanks again,
Erik

The Connect is designed to hook up to an existing amplifier and speakers. Since you have an above-average receiver already, the Connect would be the tool of choice here.

The Connect:Amp is used where there are existing passive speakers, but no current amplification.

That's my config and it works fine. Note, however, that you will need to turn the amp on and off manually unless it has an auto on/off function triggered by sensing incoming audio from the Connect. My ancient amp doesn't, so I'm searching for a cheap auto power switch device here.

Default Using Bridge to extend network

Hi

Bit of a newbie question, but I am confused to how I can extend my Sonos network.

I have an existing Bridge connected to my router, if I wanted to extend my network could I install another bridge elsewhere in the house without this being connected to my router?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Peter

Welcome to the forums.

Because SonosNet is a mesh network, every device (player, dock, bridge) serves as a relay and can strength or extend the wireless coverage into 'dark' areas.

If you have a part of the house where a Sonos player has difficulty making contact with the existing Bridge, then place another Bridge roughly half way between that player and the first Bridge. The second Bridge doesn't have to be wired back to the router.

Will this also work to extend coverage for CR200? Right now, when I step outside onto my back porch (I have speakers in the ceiling of the porch which are wired back downstairs to a ZP120 sitting in the basement) my CR200 does not "see" any zones so I have been using my iPhone / iPad as a controller (I have decent WiFi coverage on the porch). If I put a ZB (not wired) in the dining room by the door to the back porch, should that also extend the range of the CR200?
