Android Controller not connecting

I am wondering whether this issue is related to network routing priorities.. if I switch my phone to 'Airplane' mode and then turn on Wifi it connects without a problem. With the standard phone data connection turned on (ie. not 'Airplane' mode) it struggles to connect...
