Default WD Mybook World Edition keeps waking up for no apparent reason

Dear all,

I'm using a WD Mybook World Edition as NAS. It is used for no other purpose than storing my FLAC library. Since a couple of days, it keeps waking up from time to time for no apparent reason: All Zoneplayers stopped, no browsing with any of my controllers, no access from computer. This also happens when the computer is turned off. Sometimes I can even hear the HD working. The device didn't enter sleep mode last night.

I have no idea what's happening. Any hints? How can I check if the NAS is being accessed, and by what?

Thanks for any help,
best regards,
Erik

Disable the iTunes server, and set the Twonky server to never attempt to refresh its index.

Even with these changes it may occasionally spin up. Starting and stopping PCs on the network can sometimes cause this to happen. It should however spin down again after 10 mins or so, assuming it's set to do so.

Also, check the logs to see if there's anything which might indicate which machine (if any) is accessing the share. And for good measure then reboot the NAS.

I get the same with mine - if you go to the web interface, and then Advanced Mode -> Status -> System Logs then you'll probably see a load of things like this:

Code:

Like yourself, this has only started happening over the last week - even though I have unchecked 'Enable MioNet on Startup' AND manually stopped the service! The MioNet service keeps turning itself back on daily without any action on my part. I've not updated the firmware since November, so I haven't a clue why it's only started doing it recently.

So don't worry - it's not caused by your Sonos system - but yeah... I'd like to know why it's happening too!

Default That seems to be the problem

Thanks, ratty, I've done as you suggested, but that didn't solve the problem.

Pjn, you're right: I have disabled Mionet, but the log shows that it keeps switching on by itself again. It seems that this is causing the problem. I'll give WD support another chance (without too much hope).

I'll keep the thread updated.

Thanks so far!

Best regards,
Erik

Will be interested to hear if you get any response from WD. Nothing on their knowledgebase yet, and I've just found 2 other people with the same issue - both only just had it happen over the last week.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s....php?t=1242307

and

http://martin.kaufmann.name/2010/04/...rvices-on-mbwe

Mine's just kicked off again a few mins ago - MioCrawler is checking things every 30 minutes and constantly re-enabling itself... grrrr!

I've just fired off a message to WD support (including a link to this discussion) and will update when I get a response.

Default response

WD customer support sent me a one-liner with a link to their user forum:

http://community.wdc.com/t5/My-Book-...mode/td-p/5477

I'm not sure whether this really is the same problem, as my NAS does go into standby mode, it just doesn't stay there as long as expected.

The solution suggested in the thread consists of some technical mumbo jumbo including adding some lines of code somewhere. I've got no idea how to do that though...

How strange that I'm expected to jump through hoops in order to disable a function that I didn't ask for, and that the manufacturer probably installed with some effort, but obviously prevents the device from working as expected.

Thanks for the link to that post - I've implemented the fix described by user Batka in message 14 and will report back later with my results

(no response from WD yet to the mail I sent yesterday)

Two pieces of good news:

1) The script change in the forum post shared by Erik above seems to have resolved the issue for now - my drive went to sleep over 4 hours ago, MioNet hasn't re-enabled itself, and nothing dodgy is appearing in my log files.

2) I've had a response from WD, they're aware of the problem and it looks like an official fix is in the works. Apparently the MioNet software is upgraded automatically (and separately to the NAS firmware upgrades that we can control). An update was recently sent out and this appears to have been the cause of the problem.

=== Message from WD below ===

MioCrawler periodically scans the Shared Pictures folder and creates optimized thumbnail photos to work with WD Photos for iPhone/iPod Touch and will be used by other compliant DLNA devices (Xbox 360, WDTV Live, PS3, etc) soon as well. No information is sent to MioNet about the contents of the folder. MioNet automatically upgraded to version 4.1 at the beginning of April across all installations of MioNet, version 3.6 and up.

There is currently an issue with the My Book World firmware that causes MioNet to start up despite turning it off/disabling it from startup. There will be a fix for the issue in a future firmware update on the unit itself.
