I was doing a bit of research today on Net Radio on my new Yamaha RX-A1010, not because I need to use it for radio, thanks to Sonos. But I have a friend with a new Yamaha RX-V671, which is not dissimilar to my AV Receiver. While trying to prepare some help notes to get him started with Net Radio, I happened to be listening to KYBA Y105. The station stopped twice in quick succession at regular intervals, perhaps every 15 to 20 minutes or so (didn't time it).
Then listened to the same station via Sonos, and was surprised to find exactly the same thing happening. Now Yamaha uses the vTuner Internet Radio Service database, while as Sonos users will know, we use TuneIn. My guess is that this may be some kind of automatic disconnection + reconnection forced by the station's servers for some reason. I tried other stations on Sonos throughout the course of the day, and this behaviour has not been matched. Don't like things I don't understand. Anyone care to comment?

Well, Tunein and VTuner are just directories, like phone books. They don't control the stream itself, Sonos just gets the stream address and some more information like show name and artwork from tunein. Whatever happens to the music is between Sonos and the station providing the stream.
Because both Sonos and the Yamaha are experiencing the same disruption, the problem will most likely be at the server end. Maybe some kind of load balancing that drops the oldest listeners when new listeners join in? There are many stations that will forcefully disconnect you at some point to prevent wasting bandwidth on a stream nobody is listening to, but 20 mins would be very short. Usually this would be after hours.

Yes Avee, I realise vTuner and TuneIn are directories, and not the actual source of the streams.
Listened to several other stations in the course of the day, and this behaviour was not repeated on any. As you say, almost certainly a server induced glitch. Not going to give it another thought!

Hi,
I also experience breaks in radio streams. Particularly with HeartFM (London, UK based station). They seem to be fairly random and last between 1-2 seconds or sometime 1-2 minutes. My internet connection appears to be solid, it's around 40mbps down and 10mbps up. Any thoughts welcome. Many thanks ... Andrew |
